Spirits with Spirits- Haunted Bars

While you venture on your Haunted Vacations, you will need a drink stop or two. I have found 5 bars that claim to be haunted.

The Horse You Came In On SaloonBaltimore, Maryland

Established in 1775, The Horse You Came In On Saloon is Maryland’s most iconic bar and is the inspiration for creating this list of haunted bars. This bar is haunted by a ghost locals have nicknamed Edgar. This ghost will break glasses or bottles, swing from the chandeliers, open drawers and over all seem to be having a drunken fit.

The locals nicknamed this ghost Edgar because “The Master of the Macabre” himself wet his whistle here many times. That’s right, this was Edgar Allan Poe’s local pub. He stumbled his way home many nights and stories tell the last time he was seen alive was coming out of this saloon and being delirious in the streets.

Built in 1894 on top of a cemetery, it’s no surprise that this bar has paranormal activity. One of ghost, Elizabeth, is an 8 year old girl who fell out of an apple tree in the cemetery. She spends most her time now giggling in the ladies bathroom and people have often seen her little kid feet by their stalls.

In 1924, the building was owned by mob boss Al Capone. The 2nd & 3rd floor were ran as a speakeasy and brothel. Molly Brennan was a teenage hooker who was murdered in the 3rd floor penthouse one evening. People believe she has never left. Folks who have stayed the night in the penthouse have had hallucinations of burning walls and water pouring through the ceiling.

This Wild West Saloon is home to a few ghosts. Most infamous would be- A potbellied miner who hovers around the slot machines. A gambler who was killed in a card fight has been seen at sitting at the bar or card table. Finally, many believe this bar has the spirit of Carole Lombard who made her way to the bar, after she died in a plane crash just miles away; to console her heart broken widowed husband- Clark Gable. Stories say Gable drowned his sorrows in this saloon for two days straight.

Menger Bar, San Antonio, Texas

Built in 1887, Menger Bar is one of the oldest bars in the United States so it has its fair share of ghost stories. But a few of the of these ghostly visitors happen to be celebrities. For starters the ghost of Richard King, a famous cattleman and owner King Ranch. King Ranch was the largest ranch in Texas as well as the United States, totaling around 825,000 acres. Menger Bar was his local pub and a place where he could do cattle deals. It wasn’t uncommon for King to show up on any given night with ten grand in his pockets ready to strike a deal or wet his whistle or probably both. One night after heavy drinking, Richard King made it up to his personal penthouse above the bar and passed away. Folks still say they see him today.

Another big name who seems to be hanging around is that of President Theodore Roosevelt (dressed in his old military uniform). Patrons say they have seen Roosevelt sitting at a table and drinking. Just as he did when he was recruiting the cowboys of San Antonio.

This wouldn’t be a haunted bar list without mentioning New Orleans. While this bar doesn’t boast to have to most famous ghosts ever, I still think it’s backstory is unique.

Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan bought the burned-out mansion in the late 1700s. Once restored to its classic self he played a risky move. Jourdan bet his mansion in a card game. Then lost the game. Jourdan couldn’t bear the thought of leaving his beautiful home. So he killed himself on the second floor, right around where the Seance Lounges stand today.

Jourdan spends most of his time on the second floor but not as a dark ghostly figure; he is more of a moving shimmery light. He does like to knock on the brick walls from time to time.

Investigators have found out that Jourdan is not alone though. He has ghostly guests wondering all over. The investigators found a poltergeist in the courtyard and heard the voice of a woman in the lounges.
