13 Vintage Horror Book Covers

What ever happen to the days we DID judge a book by it’s cover?

We have lost something important when it comes to the horror genre of books, in my opinion. It seems like today’s popular book cover’s are just minimalist with plain neutral color backgrounds and pretty font text… BORING!

As a kid growing up in the 90’s I loved picking up horror paperbacks at thrift stores (still do love it). And to be honest I would pick a lot of them off the design artwork on the front and back covers. I thought, if the covers were terrifying then surely the story in-between was going to be even more scary. This of course was not always the case! Some were just stupid and not scary at all, but none the less, every horror book had cool/morbid covers.

Here are 13 Vintage Horror Book Covers I feel are frightening fun to look at.

Side Note: You can read “The Lurking Fear” in our newest book (Creepy Classics #1) on our Haunted Bookshelf page.

Death Tour, David J. Michael, Bobbs-Merill Books, 1978
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Harlan Ellison, Ace Books, 1976
Rockabye Baby, Stephen Gresham, Zebra Books, 1984

That was 13… I know, I wish I could keep going too. I really do wish this style of grotesque cover artwork would make a comeback.

Which was your favorite cover?

Or do you know of a creepier cover that should be on this list?

Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for reading Haunters!

Stay Scary,
